A failing drain field almost always shows up in the yard before it shows up inside. Grass over the field lines grows greener and taller than the rest of the lawn. The ground turns soft underfoot or holds standing water, even during a dry stretch of weather. Many homeowners smell sewage outside near the trenches before they notice a single thing indoors.
Inside the house, drains run slow and toilets gurgle when the washing machine empties. Sewage can back up through the lowest drain when the field will take no more water. If the trouble sits at the tank or a broken baffle instead, the fix is a repair at the tank itself. We check the tank and the field together before we tell you what the field needs.
Many fields fail in one spot while the rest of the bed still takes water fine. A crushed pipe or a root mass can be dug up and replaced on its own. We open the ground over the bad run, set in new line and gravel, then backfill and grade. Field line replacement on one lateral takes much less work than a whole new field.
Other fields are finished, and more pipe will not save them. Biomat is a black layer that builds on the trench walls and blocks water from reaching soil. Once it seals a bed, new line in the same trenches plugs up again within a few years. We move the field to fresh ground instead, and a spent tank makes the job a full septic system replacement.
Middle Tennessee sits on limestone, and the soil above that rock is often shallow clay. Clay takes water in slowly, so the trenches stay wet for days after a heavy rain. Fields in this ground can seal up sooner than fields set in deep sandy soil. A field that is already tired usually gives out during a long wet stretch of weather.
