Columbia sits on the Duck River as the seat of Maury County, about 45 miles south of Nashville. The 1906 courthouse still anchors the square, and Mule Day fills those streets every April. Maury County sits in the Central Basin, and the soil here weathered off limestone. Some of it is deep silt loam, and other ground hits hard rock inside two or three feet. The Ashwood soil series was first established in Maury County. It runs 20 to 40 inches down to phosphatic limestone, and water moves through it slowly.
Depth to rock sets the size and layout of a drain field. Slow soil leaves that field less room for error, especially on a small lot. A soil evaluation on your land answers the design question before a shovel ever moves. When ground stays wet over the field or the smell shows up, that calls for drain field repair. Septic permits here come from TDEC and its Division of Water Resources. The field office that covers Maury County sits right in Columbia and handles twelve other counties. State rule bars an owner or an installer from building or repairing a system without a construction permit. A state scientist evaluates the site first, and the permit stays good for three years.
The state also sets minimum distances for every part of the system. A disposal field stays 50 feet from a water supply and 10 feet off property lines. It stays 25 feet back from sinkholes and dry stream beds, which matters on limestone ground. Where public sewer already reaches a property, the state will not permit a new system. The City of Columbia requires that hookup, and the owner pays for the service line.
